The MAXIM study will be conducted in three phases.
Phase I will assess the basic feasibility of the MAXIM concept, consider alternate approaches, and define promising system architectures.
August 21, 1998: First study team meeting at GSFC
Phase I of the study will begin in June 1998 and be completed in September 1998.
Phase II will assess the technology requirements and develop a roadmap to achieve the desired goals. Phase II will only proceed if there appears to be a viable mission concept at the end of phase I. During phase II a workshop will be held where the results of the study will be presented and community feedback solicited. The final product of phase II will be a report that outlines the technology roadmap required to realize the MAXIM concept.
October 19-20: Second MAXIM study team meeting at CalTech
January 28-29, 1999: a two-day workshop on micro-arc second imaging at the University of Colorado.
March 1999 delivery of phase II report.
Phase II will begin in October 1998 and be completed in March 1999.
Phase III will be a basic proof of concept study, to demonstrate the validity of the basic approach. This phase will only be initiated if the outcome of phase II demonstrates that the MAXIM concept is viable.
Begin technology development program March 1999.
